This course is BRMI’s ISO 35001 implementation and lead auditor program, delivered in Mexico City in English. Over five days you move from understanding the requirements of the standard to the practice of auditing against it. You learn how to plan an audit, gather objective evidence, determine findings, and report to management.

In addition, participants will be able to establish a biorisk management system in their own organization, conduct internal audits, and lead third-party audits for conformity with ISO 35001:2019. The course is provided by CEPI and BRMI, and organized locally by AMEXBIO and the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM).

Program of activities

Based on ISO 35001:2019 and the auditing principles of ISO 19011:2026

DAY ONE

Foundations & principles of auditing

Understanding ISO 19011 principles and the auditor’s roles for an organization, as well as developing an audit programme.

DAY TWO

Planning and performing the audit

Defining scope and criteria, risk-based planning, selecting an audit team, performing the audit activities, and identifying audit findings.

DAY THREE

ISO 35001 planning

Introduction to ISO, ISO 35001, and management systems. Context, leadership, planning of a biorisk management system including risk assessment and risk mitigation based on the PDCA cycle.

DAY FOUR

ISO 35001 implementation

Biosafety and biosecurity aspects of a biorisk management system through planning, support and operation.

DAY FIVE

ISO 35001 performance

Assessing the biorisk management system through auditing, review and developing continual improvement cycles.

Security

As in any large capital, use common sense: watch your belongings, prefer Uber comfort or hotel taxis at night, and stay in the central, well-traveled areas around the venue.

Mild and comfortable, with daytime highs around 22-24 °C (72-75 ºF) and cool evenings. It's the end of the rainy season, so pack a light layer and a compact umbrella.

Eligible applicants will then receive a payment link (Paypal) or information for wire transfer. A place is confirmed once payment is complete. Full payment is due by August 24th; otherwise, the place will be offered to the next eligible applicant.
